How to set up safaricom internet on your phone

Setting Internet on your phone

To enjoy Internet browsing on your phone you must first ensure that your handset is correctly configured. Different phone models have different settings and here we have given set-up directions for the most common phones.
Setting Up
To setup your phone to access the Internet, send a blank SMS to 445. A message which contains Internet settings will be sent to your phone. Select "Save" from options to save all the settings. You are now ready for Pepea Internet Mkononi na Safaricom.
Further to requesting for mobile settings via 445, add the basic setup settings, i.e., APN, Username, Password, Data bearer, Proxy port, Proxy IP as well as the standard settings for a Chinese phone both dual SIM & mono SIM.
Apple iOS

For Iphones and Ipads

Internet Settings

  • Open your iPhone menu and click on "Settings" > "General" > "Network"
  • Click on "Cellular Network Data"
  • Enter the required information, normally:
  • Access point name: safaricom
  • Username: saf
  • Password: data
NOTE:
  • The WIFI function should be turned off :
  • Menu > Settings > WIFI:WIFI OFF

Multimedia Messaging (MMS) Settings

Go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network > MMS
Enter the following: -
APN: safaricom
Username:  saf
Password: data
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.safaricom.com
MMS proxy: leave blank
MMS max message service: leave blank
MMS ua prof: leave blank

VERSIONS: - Cupcake (1.5) Donut (1.6), Éclair (2.0-2.1), Froyo(2.2), Gingerbread(2.3) and Honeycomb versions(3.0).

Press Start > Press Settings > Press the Connections tab > Press Connections > Press the Advanced tab.
Press Select Networks. Press New... below Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using.
Settings Name: Safaricom GPRS
Press ok.
 Press the Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using drop down list.
Select Safaricom GPRS.
Press Edit... below Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using.
Press New
  • Connection Name: Safaricom GPRS
  • Select a modem: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G).
Press Next.
  • Access point name (APN): safaricom
Press Next.
  • User name: saf
  • Password: data
  • Domain: leave blank.
Press Finish
Press Safaricom GPRS to mark it.
Press ok to activate the data connection.
 Press ok twice to exit the menu item.
Press Close several times to return to stand-by mode.

Press the Servers tab > Press New
  • Server name: Safaricom MMS1
  • Gateway: 172.022.002.038

  • Connect via: Safaricom MMS
  • Sending size limitation: 300K
  • WAP version: WAP 2.0
Press Done
Press and Safaricom MMS1 until a pop-up menu is displayed.
Press Set as Default.
Press ok twice to exit the menu item.
Press the Home key to return to stand-by mode.

For Versions 7.5 to Version 8

Internet Settings

  • Access the menu by sliding the screen in the direction of the arrow (from right to left)
  • Scroll through the menu until you reach settings and then tap on settings
  • Scroll through the settings menu until you reach Access Point and then tap Access Point
  • Tap ADD
  • Enter Safaricom Internet in the connection Name field
  • Type in safaricom in the access Point Name field
  • Scroll to authentication type and select PAP
  • Tap ok when informed that there are no MMS settings as we’ll be entering them separately

Multimedia Messaging (MMS) Settings

  • Tap ADD
  • Tap connection Name and type in Safaricom mms
  • Scroll to mms APN and Enter safaricom for the mms Access Point Name
  • Scroll to Proxy address and enter 172.022.002.038
  • Tap Proxy Port and type in 8080
  • Scroll to mmsc address and enter in http://mms.gprs.safaricom.com
  • Tap authentication type and select PAP
  • Tap the tick symbol
  • Tap ok when informed that here are no internet settings as we have already entered these.
  • Tap and hold Safaricom Internet and then select activate
  • If you see the word active in blue under Safaricom internet then this has been completed successfully
Blackberry OS 10

Internet Settings

  • From the Home Screen, Swipe from bottom to top to access the menu.
  • On the Menu Screen, Locate the settings icon and open it by tapping on it.
  • On the System Settings Menu, Locate Network Connections and open it.
  • On the Network Connections Menu, Locate Mobile Network and open it.
  • On the Mobile Network Menu, Locate APN at the bottom and open it
  • On the APN Settings Menu, Type the name “safaricom” under the Access Point Name then Tap on Save at the top right corner.

Multimedia Messaging (MMS) Settings

  • On the Home Screen, swipe left to right to access the Hub.
  • Tap Text Messages, then tap Menu (3 dots), then Settings.
  • Tap Text Messages, then tap Advanced.
  • Scroll down to APN Settings
Enter the following information:
  • APN type safaricom
  • Username type saf
  • Password type data
  • MMSC URL type http://mms.gprs.safaricom.com
  • Proxy URL type 172.022.002.038:8080
  • Proxy Username = Leave Blank
  • Proxy Password = Leave Blank
  • Tap Save
